This course is designed to introduce students to the diverse aspects of American culture and civilization. It is directed towards examining traditions and institutions to help students understand and analyse the cultural features of contemporary American society. The topics that will be covered during this thirteen-week course are America and its people, the shape of the American multicultural society, immigration, race relations and ethnicity, the political institutions and the form of government.

This course is designed for EFL students who need English for both their academic and professional career. This course is important in the sense that it makes the students aware of the fact that studying is not mainly a body of knowledge but rather a skill. As such, students will be encouraged to develop new learning techniques, practise them and choose what suits them best. It aims at raising their awareness of the personal skills they have already and those they need to develop, mastering new strategies that will facilitate the learning process and inducing them to turn these personal skills into academic ones at a first stage, and be able to transfer them into their working life at a later stage.

Specialized translation

This course is mainly designed for 2nd year students (Department of Applied Languages) and is adapted to their needs. As one of the major concerns of this course is to coordinate with the business course, a special emphasis will be put on business, administrative and economic documents. Students enrolled in the Applied Languages programme will be constantly trained into translating documents that are commonly used in the world of business. As such, this course will be preparing students for a future professional career where they may be daily expected to translate business documents.
